The Directorate of Weed Research, Jabalpur organized a four-day training programme entitled “Student Training on Advances in Weed Research” during 10-13 January 2023 for 190students (112 boys and 78 girls) of B.Sc. first and second year. The training programme involved visits to conservation agriculture fields demonstrations, engineering workshop, organic farming fields, composting units, FACE facility, weed cafeteria, OTC chambers, containment facility, lysimeter unit, aquatic weed tanks, phytoremediation unit, different labs and museum cum information centre, etc. During the training programme the students were briefed aboutthe major areas of research undertaken at Directorate, its history, and weed management practices including different cultural, mechanical, chemical and biological methods. Acquaintance about important weeds of field crops was given to the students. The students got information about the importance of conservation agriculture and its role in minimizing residue burning and greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), especially CO2, CH4 and N2O emissions from crop field was highlighted. The students were also familiarized with the impact of climate change (elevated CO2 and temperature) on crop-weed interaction and herbicide efficacy.
The entire training programme was interactive with many queries from the students and a wonderful study tour from their perspective to expand their know-how about weeds, their management practices, conservation agriculture, climate resilient agriculture, instrumentations, etc.
The training programme was supervised by Dr. P. K. Singh, Pr Scientist, and coordinated by Dr. Deepak V.
