In this webinar Dr. Y.G. Shadakshari Director of Research, UAS, Bangalore gave the welcome address. Dr. S. Rajendra Prasad, Honbl’e Vice-Chancellor, highlighted the importance of weed management to protect the crop yield and gave a brief introduction about AICRP on Weed management Bengaluru Centre. He stressed on development of biological tools and new weed suppressing varieties and suggested the use of micro and nano herbicides and suggested to develop weed seed identification manual. Dr. C. Chinnusamy presented a lecture on “Parasitic weed management: Challenges and options”. He highlighted the present scenario of Indian agriculture its production and productivity. He also explained how the weeds are causing problems in cultivating crops. Later on he briefed about characteristics of all the four parasitic weeds Orobanche spp., Striga spp., Dendropthoe spp., Cuscuta spp., and also its management.
Dr. Shobha Sondhia, Principal Scientist, ICAR- Directorate of Weed Research, Jabalpur, delivered Key Note address highlighting the importance of weed management in preventing crop yield loss and thanked the speaker for his informative presentation. Dr. J.S. Mishra Director, ICAR- Directorate of Weed Research, Jabalpur, highlighted the time of herbicidal application for managing the parasitic weeds. He suggested Intercropping for managing the parasitic weeds. He also stressed on varietal screening for management of parasitic weeds in host crops. Dr. S. Bhaskar Assistant Director general, ICAR, New Delhi mentioned about aquatic weeds and weed management in horticulture crops, need of socio- economic aspects of parasitic weeds and scientific crop rotation in controlling parasitic weeds. He suggested studies on behaviour of parasitic weeds in different climatic zones. He also suggested in developing an atlas on extent of area affected by parasitic weeds and obnoxious weeds.
