ICAR-DWR, Jabalpur celebrated World Environment Day on 5th June 2021. In this occasion a webinar was organized and Dr. P.J. Khankhane, Retd. Principal Scientist and Independent Consultant on phytoremediation presented an invited talk on “Water pollution and its mitigation through phytormediation” under this year theme of World Environment Day, ‘Ecosystem restoration’. In his presentation, he has mentioned continuous deteriorated water quality of canal, ponds and river water in India and also said that around 1.5 million people dies with diarrhea disease due to use of contaminated water. Heavy concentration of lead, chromium and cadmium also caused many diseases in the human. He also told about health risk due to high arsenic content in ground water of Madhya Pradesh. Dr. Khankhane explained use of Vetevaria, Arundo donex and Typha for decontamination of industrial and sewage water through his own research findings and shared a successful story of this.
Dr. J.S. Mishra, Director, ICAR-DWR talked about renewable resources under triple RRR that is Reduce use of use of resources, Reuse, Recycle and he opined the necessity of keeping environmental balancing and recognizing importance of oxygen and water and other resources that we experienced under corona pandemic. World environment day was coordinated by Dr. Shobha Sondhia, Principal Scientist. Scientists, Technicals, Administrative and other staff members from Directorate, scientist from AICRP-Weed Managements, ICAR institution and NGO, etc. participated in the webinar organized under world environment day.
