ICAR-Directorate of Weed research Jabalpur organized World Soil Day programme on 5th December, 2024 on the theme ‘Caring Soils: Measures, Monitor and Manage’. On this occasion Dr. JS Mishra, Director urged the participants to protect our mother earth from erosion and pollution. He informed about the various schemes of the Government such as soil health card, organic and natural farming, paramparagat kheti, regenerative agriculture, etc. for maintaining soil heath and sustaining food productivity. He also underlined the importance of soil health in ONE HEALTH that recognizes the connection between the health of people, animals, plants and the environment.
Earlier, Dr. K.K. Barman, Principal scientist, soil science in his introductory remarks emphasized the need for caring soils for better food and nutritional security in changing climate scenario where extreme flood events many a times results in the heavy soil loss through water erosion.
Dr. Surabhi Hota, scientist made a brief presentation on ‘Soil database across the world’ and stressed on the importance of soil data base for developing its management strategies. Dr. Himanshu Mahawar, microbiologist talked about ‘From data to dinner: the science of soil sustainability’ where he emphasized on role of soil microbes in maintaining soil health. Around 85 participants attended the programme.
